- W762364368 abstract "Teaching is a hard profession, particularly in special education. I was recently challenged by one of my graduate professors to blog daily for a at least a month about the stresses of juggling graduate school, family demands, and teaching students with disabilities. After reading through my blog posts, I noticed that one of my greatest struggles is in the area of data collection. Through a time of reflection, I have come up with a few ways to improve in this strategic area. The changes I have made to improve my practice with data collection have benefitted not only me as an educator, but also my paraprofessionals, my students, and the administration. ********** I knew going into the field there would be lots of paperwork and data collection, but I thought working with a smaller group of students that it would be manageable. No one ever told me about the amount of time various school committees, special meetings, morning/afternoon duty, difficult parents, finding time to perform data collection, or creating lesson plans would take up. There are lots of unpleasant tasks to muddle through in order to be successful and still love your job at the end of the day. Data Collection Struggles My biggest struggle in the classroom is data collection. I was arriving to work early, and staying late and was still unable to finish it all. With all of the other paperwork; IEP's, AAA's, report cards, etc.; recording and reviewing daily data was falling by the wayside. Even through all the daily challenges, it makes my heart happy to see gradual improvements in the students, and data collection has turned out to be the best way to track that progress. Through this process, I have found that using effective data sheets (academic and behavioral), establishing routines for interpreting and utilizing data, and empowering and training my paraprofessionals has been helpful. I have really tried to focus on improving myself as a self-contained teacher especially in the area of data collection. 1 read lots of blogs, textbooks, attended workshops and talked to other successful self-contained teachers. I wanted to improve in the areas of data collection, teaching to the individual needs, and making my classroom the best it could be. The Importance of Data Collection From both fall and summer coursework, I have learned so much about data collection. Taber-Doughty & Jasper (2012) indicate that data collected is only useful if you summarize, interpret, and apply it practically. Data is most effective when it is summarized regularly and reviewed weekly to determine if the student is making progress or if something needs to be changed. Through researching and reading many journal articles, I have found that many teachers will summarize the data for the progress report and wait too long to translate that into practical application. It is wonderful that many teachers are going so far as to summarize the data for progress reports, but if a student isn't making progress, letting 9 weeks or even 4.5 weeks for interims go by without addressing the issue means a have loss of a quarter year of teaching (Taber-Doughty & Jasper, 2012). Leading by Example Changing my teaching and collecting data on a daily basis is a huge step in the right direction. Not only am I using data collection, but my aides are too. 1 worked very hard to train them about how and why we collect data and what it can be used for. It is making a productive and happy classroom. First, I placed clip boards all over the room with data sheets to encourage data collection in all aspects of my classroom. For example, I have a clipboard Velcroed by our workstation center. On this data sheet, the following things are recorded: date, description of activity and the level of assistance. Another example of data collection in the room is by the sink. We document the prompts needed for brushing their teeth, putting on deodorant, and other individual hygiene needs. …" @default.
