- W76249161 abstract "The state is a symbolic construction, a fact that has major implications for understanding of the state. Knowledge of the symbolic processes surrounding the political order has evolved from the insights of Durkheim and, later, Fortes and Evans-Pritchard, to Geertz and Bourdieu. As theory has developed, scholars have increasingly recognized that symbolic representations of the polity are not only central to attempts to bolster the political status quo, but also to attempts to undermine it. Among these processes of representation, political ritual plays a major role. Rites help tie individuals to the state; legitimize power-holders, power-seekers, and institutions; bind people emotionally through a sense of solidarity; and foster certain views of political reality. For leaders of new regimes and new states, in particular, formulating powerful representations of the new order, and powerful rites, is crucial to success. Leaders of both opposition groups within the existing order and of revolutionary movements aimed at overthrowing that order must likewise rely on the manipulation of symbols and rites. Various examples are used to illustrate these processes." @default.
