- W762733482 abstract "This paper reports a study of speed/flow/geometry relationships for rural single carriageway roads on behalf of the UK Department of Transport. Traffic speeds and flows, and relevant geometric characteristics, were measured on 42 2km to 5km long road links, carefully chosen to cover the full range of traffic and geometric conditions. Speed and flow were measured by 'number plate matching', which was considered to have several advantages over the more usual 'moving observer' technique. 3600 observations, each averaged over a ten-minute interval, were analysed by stepwise multiple regression. The aim was to quantify the relationship between vehicle speeds, flows, and geometric variables; separate models were required for light and heavy vehicles. Light vehicles were found to be more influenced by flow and geometric effects than heavy vehicles, which are more constrained by vehicle performance. Bendiness is the most important factor determining the behaviour of both types of vehicle, although it is much less important on modern designed links. Hilliness and gradient have important effects on heavy vehicles' speeds. Carriageway width affects light but not heavy vehicles. Verge width and intersections both affect speed, though other types of access have no significant effect. Visibility affects speed less than is currently assumed in cost- benefit analysis.
