- W763043265 abstract "It has been common to predict a Mexican population in the year 2000 of 130 to 135 million which is twice the 1980 census population of 67.4 million. However the birth rate has dropped since 1975 and recent projections are generally lower. A larger population in 2000 than in 1980 is foreseen. A rapid reduction in birth rates and fertility in now occurring and is expected to continue. Most published estimates--even recent ones--overestimate realistic probabilities of population growth. The official government position on family planning is positive. A population control program has been adopted as has a coordinated National Family Planning Plan. The use of contraceptives has been rapidly increasing. Fertility reduction has been estimated by 3 methods: 1) use of official birthrate data; 2) use of census information for children younger than 5 in the 1970 and 1980 censuses; and 3) use of successive national sample surveys. Unfortunately each of these methods has faults. The officially reported death rate fell in the years 1969 to 1971 1978 and 1980. This would tend to increase population growth expect for even more rapid declines in fertility. The result is a rapid reduction in the rate of population growth. Rural fertility is higher than urban. There are differences in estimated birthrates among the Mexican states. However the reduction of births is nationwide. Almost all states showed fertility reductions. Since rural birthrates are higher than urban further urbanization will contribute to lower birthrates. There is a growing permanent migration to the United States. New projections were made for the Mexican population in 2000. These result in a range of 97 to 125 million. Projections are also made of the population to 2000 by age and sex. Age-specific fertility rates are given for 1971-1979 and projected for 1995-2000. Age pyramids from the 1980 census and estimated for 2000 are also given. The population in 2000 will be lower than forecasts in common use." @default.
