- W764756944 abstract "This paper estimates the safety effects of roadway lighting at intersections using a cross-sectional study approach. Analysis taxonomies were developed to show the safety effects of lighting across a variety of intersection forms. Four years of intersection data from Minnesota and California were used to estimate negative binomial regression models of expected day- and nighttime accident frequencies. Explanatory variables common to each database were used to estimate the model parameters and to test for transferability of the regression coefficients. The regression models were not transferable between Minnesota and California. Separate models for each state were estimated using all available explanatory variables to explain the difference between expected day- and nighttime accident frequencies in California and Minnesota. Expected night-to-day accident ratios were computed at intersections with and without roadway lighting using the regression coefficients. The results indicate that the expected night-to-day accident ratio at intersections with lighting are 12 and 23 percent lower than the expected night-to-day accident ratio at intersections without lighting in Minnesota and California, respectively. Intersection lighting appears to be an effective safety countermeasure when installed at most intersection locations. Highway and traffic engineers could use the results from the present study, coupled with crash severity data, to make cost-effective lighting implementation decisions." @default.
