- W76506349 abstract "The social survey is a development of the last 120 years which may be broadly divided into the local social survey of the period between 1880 and 1940 and the modern sample survey of general populations using probability methods which has flourished since the 1930s which is now the standard method of gathering information about national populations. Sampling was first developed by Kiaer and Bowley in the early years of the twentieth century. The earlier local social survey, not using probability sampling, was particularly associated with the poverty surveys of Charles Booth and B. S. Rowntree, the Hull House Maps and Papers in Chicago, and W. E. B. DuBois's study of The Philadelphia Negro. The Social Survey Movement flourished in the USA between 1906 and 1930, and then disappeared. Progressively surveys were conducted less by private individuals and more either by scholars in academic institutions or by government. Notable landmarks include the Gallup triumph over the Literary Digest poll in the US 1936 presidential election, the study of the American Soldier carried out during World War II, and the advent of the Indian National Sample Survey designed by P. C. Mahalanobis. At the same time, advances were made in rigorous question design and in social measurement." @default.
