- W76510595 abstract "book club is not a twentieth-century invention, unless turning a thing upside down is inventiveness. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, small groups of people clubbed together to buy books because they were expensive. In colonial New York, for example, five or six men formed the New York Society Library for such a purpose in 1754, and it has had an uninterrupted existence to this day. It is now a large collection open to the public. Around the same time, the Boston Library Society thrived, and by joining another society became the present Boston Athenaeum, which combines a grand museum with a vast library and is now expanding its quarters. The book club of the mid-twentieth century was no such grassroots affair with a noble future. It started from the business end of things, its purpose being to increase the sale of books. This need had been made acute by the practice of letting booksellers return to the publisher any unsold copies. With the enormous output of books annually and the competing agencies of film, radio, and television, the publishing industry found itself producing more than it could distribute in the ordinary way of chancy announcements through reviews. Advertising is too expensive to waste on works that do not take flight on their own. The result is that by far the greater number issued good, bad, or indifferent are hustled to the remainder house. Incidentally, the book jacket is a by-product of this return policy; it protects the object on its multiple comings and goings. The simple days are over when the printer-publisher sold his wares on a stall outside the press, direct to the passerby." @default.
