- W76524488 abstract "According to the classical crystallization mechanism, the growth of single crystals is through the replication of unit cell by the addition of atoms, molecules, ions, and complexes to active sites on kinks and steps. By contrast, various biominerals as well as synthetic materials exhibited three-dimensional superstructures of nanocrystals with highly parallel orientation. The growth of these materials is a mesoscale assembly process through the alignment of preformed nanocrystal building blocks. With single crystal-like characteristics, these materials exhibit potentials for applications in diverse disciplines. In recent years, a number of efforts have been made to achieve the formation of crystallographically ordered nanocrystal superstructures by nanoparticle-based self-assembly. In this chapter, the progress in this field is summarized with a focus on three classifications of nonclassical crystal materials: mesocrystals, single crystals with dislocations, and mesoporous films with iso-oriented nanocrystalline walls. This chapter begins with introducing the fundamentals of nonclassical crystallization, progresses to discuss mesocrystal formation in depth with six types of mechanisms, and then discusses experimental and theoretical advances in the other two classifications of nonclassical crystals." @default.
