- W765605062 abstract "Environmental protection laws have obliged industries throughout the world to develop and use products with low toxicity levels. As a result, waterborne paints are becoming increasingly important in protecting steel against atmospheric corrosion. However, many countries, mainly those that do not have specific legislation regarding paints and their effect on the environment, continue to be reluctant to use waterborne paints for anticorrosive protection of steel surfaces. A part of this reluctance can be linked to doubts about anticorrosive performance of waterborne paints. Another important issue is cost, with many facility owners believing that waterborne paint systems ought to be less expensive than organic solvent-borne systems, as they can use water for the thinner. This reasoning is flawed though, as waterborne anticorrosive paints are technologically more complex than organic solvent-borne paints. With these issues in mind, this article gives results of the authors' research, comparing the anticorrosive performance of waterborne and solvent-borne paint systems on carbon steel plates in atmospheres of different corrosivity categories. In this article, a 'waterborne coating' is defined as one with a binder that is soluble in organic solvents." @default.
