- W76566000 abstract "Liver is the main site of glutathione (GS) synthesis and it transports this tripeptide both into blood and bile (Kaplowitz et al., 1985). Hepatobiliary transport of GS is also thought to play an important role in the biliary excretion of some toxic metals such as methylmercury (MM; Ballatori and Clarkson, 1985) which is mainly excreted from the body via the bile and feces (Norseth and Clarkson, 1971; Gregus and Klaassen, 1986). MM is found in rat bile complexed with GS and cysteine (Ohsawa and Magos, 1974; Refsvik and Norseth, 1975). Complexation of MM with these non-protein thiols (SH) in bile may explain the direct relationship between the biliary excretion rates of SH and MM in rats. For example, increased biliary excretion of SH during the postnatal period (Ballatori and Clarkson, 1982) or diminished SH excretion following depletion of hepatic GS (Refsvik, 1978) are associated with respective changes in the biliary excretion of MM." @default.
