- W766153036 abstract "Crustaceans show an extraordinary diversity for their ways of life and their diets. A large number of habitats have been occupied by crustaceans; however, they are basically aquatic and mainly marine. While crustaceans occupy diverse aquatic environments, that is, marine and both riverine and lacustrine fresh waters, there are also many paralittoral or amphibious species. The marine habitats of Crustacea are so diverse that any attempt at sorting taxa will necessarily be artificial and represent no more than a coarse approach. In general, freshwater crustaceans are less diversified than those living in the sea. This is easily explained by their possible mode of colonization of the continental habitats that is, via introgression from the littoral. In general, Crustacea have not been able to become independent of contact with water, either still requiring some form of direct contact, or at least needing the proximity of accessible water. Keywords: amphibious species; aquatic environments; crustaceans; lacustrine fresh waters; marine habitats; paralittoral species; riverine fresh waters" @default.
