- W766706656 abstract "For flooding and discharging of ballast tanks central flood tunnels are often arranged in the double bottom of ships. This arrangement is considered to be advantageous from the operational point of view. However the structural design is connected with high production costs. A cost-saving design is achieved if central ballast pipes are integrated into the double bottom steel structural instead of a rectangular channel with internals. The strength of such simplified design has been investigated with full-scale models. For the purpose of an overall strength analysis the double bottom is usually idealised as a grillage beam model. Recommendations for a beam element idealisation of the new design have been derived from finite element calculations. In these calculations plate elements have been used to model the whole double bottom structure. Tests up to maximum available loads caused plastic deformations but no collapse of the structure, well within the usual safety requirements.
