Some, hushed and excited in Mr. Frick's circular chamber, marveling at what appeared a critical, philosophical and poetic revolution, reopened the Four Quartets. Others closed their Donnes and opened their Miltons. In 1 92 1, as everybody knows, Eliot had prohibited Milton, and all except a few in academies abandoned that poet. This is less surprising than it was. For it is clear now that Eliot is a literary dictator. When at the Frick Collection he compared himself to Dr. Johnson, Eliot stated what his essays have implied. However tentative his private conversation and diffident his private demeanor, his essays and public addresses, appealing to authority, have been not only dogmatic but Johnsonian. Eliot prohibited Milton in Metaphysical Poets, an essay notable for a phrase as famous as Dr. Johnson's discordia concors. The dissociation of sensibility (which, like the objective correlative, had effects, Eliot confesses, far beyond his expectations) dazzled a decade because it seemed a clue to the understanding of some poems and a formula for dismissing others. Weary of the nineteenth century, readers and poets, armed with Eliot's phrase, turned to Donne, who, thinking and feeling at" @default.
