- W76840536 abstract "Maintaining civility among college students is a great concern among many academics although many regulations exist in this area. This study examined the level of students' incivility at Kuwait University. The researcher developed a Student Incivility Questionnaire (SIQ) consisting of 21 items to describe students' perceptions of the spread of incivility in the classroom. Five hundred and five students participated and reported that the spreading of college incivility is in the average range, although most of the faculty members take great care to inform them of regulations. Additionally, females and students who are juniors perceive the spread of students' incivility in high numbers in the university colleges compared to other groups' perceptions. ********** Students' incivility in institutions of higher education is a great issue that faces faculty members during their teaching duties in the classrooms. Kiracofe and Wells (2007) pointed out that students' misconduct is increasing in academic institutions, and incivility towards faculty is drawing media attention (Morrissette, 2001). Feldmann (2001) indicated that Classroom incivility is any action that interferes with a harmonious and cooperative learning atmosphere in the classroom (p. 137). It negatively affects the learning environment, specifically faculty. It takes up faculty time and energy to deal with this behavior and takes time away from the lecture content. Faculty feel stressed and sometimes hesitate to discuss the incivility of students for fear of being criticized that they are less experienced in management (Morrissette, 2001). Many higher education institutions have submitted numerous regulations to indicate acceptable conduct in the institution, more specifically behavior in the classroom. Of these examples: Kuwait University. The university submits a students' code to include behavior in the which emphasizes that students should keep quiet and be respectful, students are not allowed to attend classes in which they are not registered, and students cannot record the lecture without faculty permission. Eating, drinking and smoking are forbidden (Kuwait University, Student discipline code, 1986). Utah State University also has a great concern for dealing with incivility on campus and submits codes to manage incivility. According to the university code, Disruptive behavior involves physical actions, verbal utterance, or other activities which interfere with either the faculty member's ability to conduct the class or the ability of other students to profit from the instructional program (Utah State University, 2002, p. 1). The university gives the faculty the right to tell the students about unacceptable behavior and to ask them to change. If the continues the unacceptable behavior, a notification should be submitted to the department head or to the dean to find a solution. Also, the faculty has the right to remove the from the class when the student has compromised the faculty member's right to teach or the students' right to learn. The faculty member will inform the whether the removal is for the current meeting only or the removal also includes subsequent meetings (p. 2). Kalamazoo College described several types of disruptive behavior in the classroom. Some of them are persistent speaking without permission, inappropriate use of cell phones, threats, sleeping in class, entering class late or leaving early (without permission), eating/drinking in class without permission, and disputing authority and arguing with faculty and other students (Kalamazoo College, Academic policies and regulations, 2005, p. 1). Indeed, submitting codes to manage behavior in the is an important procedure in most higher education institutions. …" @default.
