- W768791431 abstract "The present works relates to the investigations on five new silver electrode systems consistingof sparingly soluble compounds of the weak electrolytes. The standard electrode potential and thethermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy changes which reflect light on theelectrochemical nature of the electrodes have been evaluated. The determination of standard electrode potentials (E°) confronts the following three crucial problemsand needs proper solutions for obtaining accurate values of E° of various electrode systems.1) How to obtain high order of accuracy in experimental measurements of potentials?2) How to establish at the fastest speed the electrochemical equilibria between solid – solutioncomponents of an electrode system?3) And, which of the extrapolation method should be chosen as the most appropriate one for aparticular electrode system? All these three aspects have been given close attention in the present investigations. The precisioninstruments are used in the experimental measurements of potentials; new type of large areaelectrodes (sintered silver electrodes of porous nature) are exploited as support for the sparingly solubleelectrode materials to accelerate the attainment of equilibrium and lastly, the most suitable method ofextrapolation is chosen taking into consideration the weak nature of the electrolytes used in theseelectrode systems. With these precautions taken on the experimental and theoretical side, it is felt thatthe high order of accuracy has been achieved in the determination of E° as well as the thermodynamicconstants of the electrodes reported here. The evaluation of standard potential and the thermodynamic parameters of silver oxalate, succinate, tartrate, citrate and phosphate electrodes constitute the main work of the thesis, while the survey ofthe past developments in the subject and the review and classification of various types of potentials andtheir definitions comprise the subsidiary work." @default.
