- W768794270 abstract "Publisher Summary The capacity to differentiate into a remarkably resistant and dormant structure, the endospore, unifies a heterogeneous collection of prokaryotes. Endospores and their components show such considerable biochemical and genetic conservation that it is often forgotten that the parent cells are not only restricted to rod-shaped bacteria, but also occur as cocci (Sporosarcina) and filamentous bacteria reminiscent of the actinomycetes in morphology (Thermoactinomyces). Enodospore-forming bacteria are important ecologically and commercially. In case of the insect pathogens, these two factors overlap and the result is that the ecology of B. thuringiensis and B. sphaericus is reasonably well known. For the other representatives, the ecology is less well understood, but it is to be hoped that as an appreciation of these bacteria in industry grows, new and unusual isolates will be required and this will encourage further studies of the ecology of these fascinating bacteria." @default.
