- W76883047 abstract "Public Policy and the Rights of Mental Patients is the initial article in a two-part series that will examine the patients' rights movement and advocacy from two perspectives. The author of the first piece is Phil Brown, who teaches medical sociology, psychiatric sociology, and social psychology at Brown University. Among other things, he has written Toward a Marxist Psychology, edited a collection entitled Radical Psychology and published articles on mental health policy. This article on mental patients' rights is part of a larger project that is examining staff attitudes toward patients' rights at a state hospital. Based on his social-psychological perspective, Phil Brown identifies a conflict between the public policy goals of mental health planners and the underlying goals of clients and their advocates. The conflict is discussed in light of three factors: lack of coherence in mental health public policy, recent backlash against patients' rights and the author's own survey of the attitudes toward patients' rights among professionals and client groups. In the next issue, a psychiatrist and a psychologist employed by the National Institute of Mental Health will examine the patients' rights movement and ad vocacy." @default.
