SOME PHENOMENA SPECIFIC TO GRANULAR MEDIA CAN BE EXPLAINED QUANTITATIVELY BY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT PARTICLE DEFORMATION ALONE (THE PARTICLES ARE ASSUMED TO BE ELASTIC AND TO BE GOVERNED BY HERTZ THEORIES FOR NORMAL FORCES AND MINDLIN THEORIES FOR TANGENTIAL FORCES), ESPECIALLY THE FOLLOWING PHENOMENA: (1) ISOTROPIC COMPRESSION; (2) LATERAL EARTH PRESSURE AT REST (HENDRON 1963); (3) LIMIT CURVE (SCHLOSSER 1968); (4) LOCAL IRREVERSIBILITY AND HYSTERESIS PHENOMENA. NATURAL MEDIA ARE REPRESENTED BY REGULAR PILES OF EQUAL SPHERES WITH A NON-ZERO COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION. THIS APPROXIMATION EXPLAINS QUALITATIVELY PART OF BEHAVIOUR DUE TO SMALL SHEAR STRESSES BUT SHOWS MARKED DEVIATIONS FROM REAL CONDITIONS FROM THE QUANTITATIVE POINT OF VIEW. IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN MORE ACCURATELY THE BEHAVIOUR OF A REAL PILE OF NATURAL MATERIALS, THE FOLLOWING PHENOMENA ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION: (1) TRANSFER OF FORCES BY STRESS LINKS; (2) WIDER CONTACT AREAS WITH INCREASING MEAN PRESSURE. THE REGULAR PILES OF MATERIALS ARE ASSUMED TO CONSIST OF SPHERES WITH TWO SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DIAMETERS. A STUDY IS CONDUCTED ON THESE PILES OF LATERAL EARTH PRESSURE AT REST AND LIMIT CURVE PHENOMENON. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE COEFFICIENTS KO AND KA ARE NOT THE SAME AS THEY WERE FOR PILES OF SPHERES HAVING THE SAME DIAMETER. THE KO/KA RATIO VALUE DEPENDS ON THE GAP STRUCTURE CONSIDERED, AS DOES THE TG PHI/TG THETA RATIO (THE ANGLE THETA CHARACTERIZING THE LIMIT CURVE), WHICH EQUALS 3 FOR POWDERY MEDIA AND IS CLOSE TO 1 FOR REGULAR PILES OF SPHERES OF EQUAL DIAMETER." @default.
