- W77129460 abstract "Introduction Among the cardinal functions of a university are research, teaching and community service (Koh & Sharifah, 1988). Different universities give different weightage to the above-mentioned core business: Research universities in Malaysia such as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Salns Malaysia COSM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) place due emphasis on research without neglecting the other two cardinal functions. Recently the Prime Minister of Malaysia has called upon the Vice-Chancellors of Malaysian universities to make graduate employability part and parcel of their Key Performance Indicator (KPI) when he launched a programme called SLIM (1 Malaysia Training Scheme) on emplacement of unemployed graduates in government-linked companies (GLC's) (Ahmad, 2011). The exhotatation coming from the Prime Minister himself makes it all the more compelling. Employability of our graduates has been a concern and an interest to the government, the public and local institutions of higher learning. It is a social-education issue. The Alumni Relations Office (PPAlumni) of UKM has been tasked to undertake studies on the employability of our graduates since 2006 and a preliminary report has been published in a prestigious education journal (Ramli et al., 2009). This paper is a sequal to the Studies mentioned above and it covers a duration of five years (2006-2010). It hence sheds more light on the employability prospects of our UKM graduates from various disciplines. Methodology Since 2006 the annual study has been consistently carried out by PPAlumni in August for about a week. Each time graduands (would-be graduates) were given questionnaires (designed by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and whenever necessary fine-tuned by the universities) to answer online when they came to borrow gowns and mortar-boards prior to the convocation. By August their employment status was already known whether they had secured employment, waiting for job placement, furthering their studies for a higher degree, taking a short course or just plainly unemployed. Since many graduates made it a point to attend their convocation, we managed to get good response (about 95%) regarding their job status. From the statistics we compile a report for the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia. Similar surveys are also carried out by the other 19 public universities in Malaysia. Results Table 1.1 gives the figures for the employment status of UKM graduates since 2006. Since the survey is carried out in August every year and most final-year students sit for their last papers in March/April, it is expected that some of them have yet to find gainful employment during that short period of time. They have to compete not only with graduates from other public universities, they also have to compete with graduates from private universities in Malaysia and those who have graduated from universities overseas. Those who have secured employment (about 60%) must have impressed their interviewers with their communication skills and good personality (Koh, 2010). For UKM graduates, their employability has consistently improved since 2006. It must be morale-boosting to UKM's stakeholders. Since 2006 there has been a concormitant decrease in the percentage of our unemployed graduates. In 2010 it was only 23.49% compared to 28.30% in 2006. As can be seen from Table 1.2, the government remains the biggest employer of our UKM graduates followed by our local private sector. Since 2008, a small percentage (about 2%) of our graduates are employed by our government-linked companies (GLC's). These GLC's are strict and demanding in their recruitment. They have their own scholarship schemes whereby bright and brilliant students are sponsored by them to study in premier universities in the UK and the US and they have to fulfill their scholarship contracts when they return. …" @default.
