- W77200543 abstract "Abstract In order to detect the presence of antibodies toEncephalitozoon cuniculi antigens, five different laboratorymouse colonies of ICR andC57BL/6types as well as threebreeding colonies of domestic rabbits anda colony of wildrabbits were examined. IFAT and ELISA were used asserological diagnostic methods. Out of 132 laboratory miceexamined, 20 (15.2%) were serologically positive to E.cuniculi. Positive mice were detected in two out of fivecolonies. Serum specific antibodies were alsodetected in 16(21.33%) individuals out of 75 rabbits coming from threedifferent rabbit colonies examined by the IFA test, andin 21(44.7%) wildrabbits out of 47examined by the ELISA. Ourresults have confirmed the dissemination of the parasite inbreeding colonies of laboratory animals and rabbits in ourterritory. Several preventive measures toimprove the health ofsusceptible animal breedingcolonies have beensuggested. Key words: rabbits, laboratory mice,Encepha-litozoon cuniculi, epidemiology. Encephalitozoon cuniculi is a strict intracellularmammalian parasite systematically classified as aseparate phylum of Microspora (7). The absence ofmitochondria results in the complete dependence ofmicrosporidia on the energy metabolism of a host cell.E. cuniculi is relatively small with the dimension of 1.5x 2.5 µm. A mature organism is a spore covered by aprotein and chitin coating. The host cell is infected in theprocess of germination in which the spore extrudes itsprotoplasm through the everted polar filament into itscytoplasm. The causative agent of the disease can becharacterised by a relatively wide spectrum ofsusceptible mammalian hosts in the orders ofLagomorpha, Rodentia, Carnivora, and Primates.Encephalitozoonosis is most frequently developed afterthe oro-faecal or oro-urinal transmission; however, thevertical transmission of the infection is also quitecommon in carnivores and rodents (5). In the individualswith physiological immune system conditions, it ismanifested as a chronic asymptomatic infection. Thediagnostics of a clinically apparent disease demonstratesthe suppression or deficiency of cellular immunity of thehost organism (6).Based on the biological data and data concerningE. cuniculi dissemination, the parasite can be concludedas a cause of serious infection of laboratory mousecolonies that deteriorates the results achieved in theexamination of these animals. Neither economicconsequences can be neglected, as encephalitozoonosisin farm rabbits leads to direct losses in profitability bythe decrease in slaughter weight by 13% (10). All thesefacts have lead us to an attempt to determine theprevalence of microsporidioses in mice and rabbitbreeding colonies in Slovakia on the grounds ofreactions of specific antibodies in selected serologicaltests." @default.
