- W774386572 abstract "I: England's Catholic Queen. By John Edwards. (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2011, pp. xvii, 387. $35.00.)In terms of scholarship, at one time, the reign of I was considered practically virgin territory. Henry VIII and Elizabeth I attracted much of the attention, and scholarly treatments of his other daughter that even did exist were of comparatively poor quality, sometimes plagued by religious partisanship. In recent years, the pendulum has swung to the other side, and now anyone interested in learning about can choose from a number of biographies: Anne Whitelock's Tudor: Princess, Bastard, Queen; The Myth of Mary (2010): A Biography of Queen I of England (2009) by Linda Porter; and Carolly Erickson's Bloody (1998). These are just some of the more recent ones.Is another biography of Tudor even necessary at this time? It depends. If one is looking for a scholarly study-and not merely a popular, novel-like tomethat focuses not so much on her English roots (her being the daughter of Henry VIII of the Tudors) but rather her Spanish roots (her also being the daughter of Catherine, herself the daughter of dual monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella from Spain; and also the wife of Philip II, King of Spain, King of Sicily, Lord of the Seventeen Provinces in the Low Countries, etc.), then one should seriously consider John Edwards' I: England's Catholic Queen (2013). Edwards is on the modern languages faculty at Oxford as a research fellow in Spanish, but he is more than able as a historian, having already edited, along with Ronald Truman, Reforming Catholicism in the England of Tudor: The Achievement of Friar Bartolome Carranza (2005). Carranza was arguably the most influential Roman Catholic from the continent who advised Mary, Pole, and others who wanted to reestablish the faith in England.Carranza was of good service to Mary, as is Edwards here. In the first third of the book, Edwards addresses Mary's life prior to taking the throne in 1553. Anyone with a tender heart will be saddened to read of the abuse she had to endure as a child and teenager. Anyone with an appreciation of the value of inner strength and character would be impressed with her stoic response. When her father divorced her mother Catherine, herself was labeled as illegitimate. Additional humiliations were to come. Henry VIII was a king to be feared, but must not have gotten that message, as she openly defied him, refusing to accept her stepmother Anne as legitimate. …" @default.
