- W774402493 abstract "This article traces developing prominence of theme of social justice in both professional world of psychology and evangelical church community. This convergence creates opportunity for development of a movement promote cause of social justice in Majority World. Five points of convergence are explored: (a) Social action and evangelicalism are not irreconcilable; (b) social justice agenda is an appropriate focus for future of psychology in Majority World; (c) culture transcending nature of Christianity promotes social justice in a multi-ethnic context; (d) social justice character of pentecostalism's growth in Global South; and (5) ubiquitous nature of local church in Global South. The modem Evangelical mental health professional is well-positioned contribute a movement that could turn world upside down. These who have turned world upside down have come here too....and these are all acting contrary decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king-Jesus. (Acts 17:6-7, New King James Version)The vast number of Christian books on subject of social justice available on market today, and enthusiasm that today's generation of young people displays for causes ranging from sexual trafficking inner city ministry leads one conclude that there appears be a significant shift taking place in church. Something is stirring among evangelicals in United States says Markham (2010, p. 1), younger evangelicals are clearly taking up a broader social agenda than previous generation. In this article I want review literature in both theology and psychology as it relates social justice. Although issues of social justice have been central church's mission since first century, a series of incidents during early part of 20 ' century had a significant negative impact on desire of Western evangelicals be publically associated with issues of social justice. The result was that they rather chose focus on evangelism, sometimes neglect of poor and marginalized. Today's revival in interest appears provide evidence that we have come end of that era that was referred as Great Reversal. There are encouraging evidences that we may be regaining what Ralph Winter termed, the vision of our forefathers in Faith (Winter, 2007, p. 6), an evangelicalism where personal and social transformation proceeds hand in hand.At same time that these changes are taking place in evangelical community psychology profession has also come under pressure be more sensitive issues of social justice. The profession has been goaded by members of academy from fields of multicultural counseling and feminist psychology acknowledge that environmental contexts in which clients find themselves can contribute significantly mental distress. Counselors need to liberate themselves from a myopic view of counseling that has historically overemphasized an individual, intrapsychic approach and move to...foster a greater level of social justice in their client's lives (Crethar, Rivera, & Nash, 2008, p. 269)Asa professional committed both ministry of church and applications of social sciences ministry of church I am vitally interested in confluence of this theme of social justice in both fields of theology and psychology. In this article I want analyze status of social justice as it currently appears in literature of evangelical theological community as well as in psychological literature, but I want do this from a Majority World perspective. I will conclude with some guidelines that can be gleaned from these literature sources promote cause of informed social justice practice in Majority World.Self-Disclosure and Personal BiasWhen I approach subject of social justice my perceptions are heavily influenced by a history of dual loyalties. …" @default.
