- W77458341 abstract "This chapter discusses an approach and example of expert systems embedded in administrative applications. Originally, BIM was a software house exhibiting an activity in the development of administrative applications for small and medium sized companies using a traditional software development practice. Since the early 1980s, BIM has been rethinking its strategy and has consequently developed additional activity streams that support and extend the original charter. The overall aim of these extensions was to be able to provide larger customers with total solutions for their mission critical applications. Expert system technology is an important component in this context, but needs to be supplemented by the mastery of the more traditional aspects of application development. The chapter presents the thesis that an application should be tackled taking the operational requirements into account right from the inception of the project, even if it could be qualified as a typical expert system. It also describes the basic software components developed by BIM for expert system undertakings, the general architecture and the methodology adopted for building embedded expert systems in an administrative context, and the development of a particular expert system executed on behalf of the Belgian Ministry of Economic Affairs." @default.
