- W775168 abstract "Both human pathology and experimental studies have shown that lesions of the basal ganglia or cerebellum produce severe disturbances of motor activity. Anatomical convergence from the basal ganglia and cerebellum, via a thalamic relay, to the motor cortex suggest an analogous role for these two central loops. The present study was aimed at investigating some aspects of the functional role of both systems in a goal-directed movement. Baboons were trained to point at a visual target. The latency of the response ( reaction time , RT), the speed of execution ( movement time , MT) and the terminal spatial accuracy were recorded. The cerebellar dentate nucleus or the globus pallidus were temporarily blocked by cooling or permanently inactivated by electrolytic lesions. Increased reaction time, changes in movement time and impairment of accuracy were observed after dentate inactivation. Decreased reaction time and modifications of speed and accuracy of responses were noted after pallidal inactivation. Complementary influences of dentate nucleus and pallidum on the thalamo-cortical pathway, or on alternative subcortical systems, are discussed with regard to their role in the triggering and execution of limb movements in primates." @default.
