- W7751775 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the formation of continuously ordered maps. It highlights that optic nerve fibers regenerating from a normal eye to a tectum also innervated by abnormal distribution of optic fibers from an operated eye mimics the abnormal distribution of fibers already present on that tectum. Optic nerve fibers regenerating in adult animals face a very different situation from that confronting them when they first grow into the brain during development. In Xenopus, the eye grows by the addition of cells to all three retinal layers at the ciliary margin, while the tectum grows by addition of cells caudo-medially. Despite these different modes of growth of retina and tectum, the retinotectal projection establishes early in the development of both retina and tectum and the order of the retinotectal map remains constant throughout the further development of the system. The chapter explains that this changing geometry of the retinotectal system in developing Xenopus requires that retinotectal connections undergo continuous modification during development. Such synaptic mobility as appears necessary seems to rule out any simple form of target-affinity here; the target for any particular retinal fiber is continually changing. In animals, such as Xenopus, where growth continues throughout life, a stable target does not exist." @default.
