- W77679045 abstract "This thesis investigates the ways in which form of employment has consequences for quality of work and working life. It presents an account of the organisation of work and the experiences of people employed in diverse work arrangements or ‘forms of employment’ in the bookkeeper occupation in Australia. Through a comparative analysis within a single occupation the thesis shows that form of employment changes conditions and experiences of work in complex and contradictory ways. It is widely acknowledged that standard employment involving a full-time contract of on-going work is no longer feasible or desirable as the normative model for good work. However, it is not clear what might replace this model or how paid work in other forms of employment might be constructed as good jobs. ‘Non-standard’ employment—employment that deviates from standard employment in its temporal or contractual arrangements or in workers’ employment status—has grown significantly and while this growth suggests new possibilities for jobs that meet different needs across the life cycle it has also generated concerns about the quality of jobs. This thesis makes two contributions to debates about the changing nature of employment. Conceptually, it establishes a normative framework for quality of work which can apply equally to diverse forms of employment. In the thesis it is argued that concepts of job quality and good work have relied on standard employment as a normative ideal and/or empirical reference point. A ‘dignity at work’ framework is developed as an alternative conception of good work that does not rely on work in a full-time employment relationship as the norm. Methodologically, the single occupation case study provides a comparative analysis of people’s experiences in different work arrangements within that occupation. This comparative approach to the study of changing forms of employment has the capacity to reveal the diversity of ways in which form of employment can have consequences for workers. Empirically, in-depth interviews provide accounts of individuals’ experiences with a focus on a comparison of the experiences of employees and self-employed contractors in the highly female-dominated workforce providing bookkeeping services to small firms. The thesis also engages with debates about the ways in which economic exchanges are socially embedded; it shows how social and economic processes are intertwined and overlapping in small firm work relations and how gender processes shape the labour market and employment at all levels. The research finds that labour market and occupational context are significant for shaping the ways in which form of employment affects opportunities for dignity at work. In the bookkeeper occupation important factors include structures of demand, gender processes, the informal nature of work relationships in small firms and the connections between formal and informal work. The thesis also shows that the meanings attached to a work role and perceptions of a role’s status can vary with form of employment and these variations can be significant for peoples’ experiences of dignity at work." @default.
