- W77681312 abstract "This chapter discusses the physical barrier methods used for protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms provide significant protection against the most common STDs. They are an adjunct to and not a substitute for other safer sexual practices. Their consistent and correct use lowers the risk beyond that achieved by limiting the number of one's sexual partners, reducing or eliminating the use of drugs and alcohol associated with sex, and improving communication with partners. The large majority of the male condoms are made from latex—although some of them are made from the sheep intestinal membrane as well. The synthetic condoms made from the polyurethane comprise a small part of the market. Their utility is proven by a low degree of failure and is supported by clinical and epidemiologic studies demonstrating a reduction in disease incidence among users. Evidence assures excellent reduction in risk for the consistent users who are at moderate to low risk or who have adequately lowered their risk in other ways. The use of spermicide, either alone or as an adjunct to condoms, can also provide protection." @default.
