- W777029450 abstract "Traffic calming measures, including physical speed control devices, are increasingly used today on roads with higher traffic volumes, such as sub-arterial roads and main streets in commercial centers. The main objectives of these measures are to improve the safety of both pedestrians and drivers and to improve the environmental conditions for all road users and nearby residents. Numerous studies have shown that most of these schemes have successfully achieved the set objectives and that the overall response by the public is clearly positive. However opinion surveys have found that motorists usually felt disadvantaged by speed control devices and that residents living near those devices often complain of deterioration of, rather that improvements in, environmental conditions. The claims suggest that there is a need to investigate any possible side-effects associated with these traffic management techniques. This paper describes a research study conducted at the University of New South Wales, Australia, that investigated the effects of speed control devices on fundamental characteristics of traffic never analyzed before, such as vehicle headways, vehicle platooning, pedestrian crossability and average delays to vehicles from driveways attempting to enter the main stream of traffic. The paper provides an overview of the research objectives, the survey and analysis methods, and a comprehensive presntation and interpretation of the results and conclusions of the study." @default.
