- W777335763 abstract "In the past few years, a network of trails has grown within Pennsylvania. This is due in large part to the conversion of abandoned rail corridors into bicycle and pedestrian facilities, or rail/trails. As this network expands, these facilities will attract more and more users for both recreation and commuting. Subsequently, proper design of these trails is critical for the safety of users. In particular, special attention to the design is warranted where trails intersect with roadways, mainly because of the hazard of a possible collision between a motor vehicle and a trail user. The purpose of this research project was to investigate engineering and planning issues related to trail-highway crossings and to provide the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) with recommendations on how to plan and design for safe operations at a trail-highway crossing. To formulate the conclusions and recommendations, interviews were held with PennDOT engineers and trail-related organizations wrestling with these very issues. In addition, a literature search was conducted to supplement the information obtained from the interviews. This report recommends a more proactive future role based on the premise that users of rail/trails are customers of PennDOT (at least at those points where rail/trails cross state-owned highways), and abandoned rail lines represent valuable economic and social resources because of their potential for a variety of future transportation uses. Responsibility for the preservation of this potential, when warranted, logically lies with the Commonwealth's transportation agency." @default.
