- W779893655 abstract "The central topic of this study was the comparison of normative and ipsative factors. Cattell (19^4) has defined these terms, and Broverman (1961) has discussed at length the implications of ipsative measurement in psy chology. Broverman stated that ipsative measures yield factors different from those yielded by normative measures of the same behavior. The difference is that ipsative fac tors represent patterns of characteristics based upon lntraindividual comparisons, whereas normative factors represent group (inter-individual) patterns. Moreover, he says that predictions about individual functioning ought to be based upon the intra-individual patterns rather than upon group patterns. Another issue of importance in the Investigation was the effect of sample selection on factor structure. Thurstone (19^7) stated that even marked sample selection does not alter basic factor structure. In making this predic tion, Thurstone was concerned only with the effect of restricted lntra-variable variance. Since other studies suggested that the effects of sample selection might be related to the effects of lpsatizing, some attempt to evaluate this waB deemed necessary." @default.
