- W780694017 abstract "Conrad Broske's chiliastic writings bring us to the heart of the man and his complex piety of renewal. They offer a valuable window into the circumstances, themes and development of Broske's Philadelphian millennialist thought. To highlight his departure from earlier Protestant teaching on the last days, it is important to consider first the eschatology of some sixteenth century reformers and the gradual rise of Protestant millennial thinking. Among the magisterial reformers, Martin Luther demonstrated the strongest apocalyptic interest and mindset. The apocalyptic mindset is much less evident in John Calvin. Calvin also used the language of Revelation to describe the Pope as Antichrist, and saw the prophecies in 2 Thessalonians and Revelation fulfilled in the Roman Papacy. Conrad Broske's mentors in influencing his prophetic turn were Thomas Beverley and Jane Leade. In 1692 he introduced Der entdeckte Wider-Christ on a somewhat apologetic note. Keywords: chiliastic writings; Conrad Broske; Jane Leade; John Calvin; Martin Luther; Philadelphian millennialist thought; prophecies; Protestant teaching; Thomas Beverley" @default.
