- W781123939 abstract "After its initial coining, almost three centuries ago, by the forester Carlowitz (1713), sustainability has acquired an evolutionary meaning, related to the needs of human society which the forests are supposed to meet, and to the way it had been applied later (DPIE, 1996). For many years, the application of sustainability has been focused on timber cuttings, since the main interest of society was exclusively orientated toward wood products. However, in the last decades, the meaning of forest sustainability has been transformed to connote a balance in the forest’s multiple functions. These functions are related to the three basic uses of forests, that is the consumptive uses (e.g., harvesting and hunting forest resources, recreational uses), the non-consumptive uses (e.g., ecotourism, genetic resources and existence values) and the ecological functions (watershed protection, carbon storage, and microclimatic role) (Barbier, 1994)." @default.
