- W78306732 abstract "In a representative democracy, representatives communicate with the representated, often with controlled messages generated by legislators. We theorize that male and female representatives differ systematically in the information they choose to disseminate to constituents. We theorize that widely held gender stereotypes constrain the messages that men and women politicians choose to send to citizens. On the one hand, we expect men and women senators to produce press releases that highlight positive gender stereotypes about policy matters. And, on the other hand, we predict that senators will generate press releases aimed at counteracting potentially damaging gender stereotypes about personal characteristics. We examine press releases of a sample of 32 U.S. Senators in the spring and fall of 2006. We found that the gender of the senator predicted the types of issues senators discussed in press releases. For example, male senators played to their strengths and focused on “male” issues in their press releases and they also took “credit” for policy outcomes related to “male” issues. Senators also worked hard to offset citizens’ negative views of their personal traits. Male senators provided evidence of their caring and empathy by sending out press releases focused on the federal projects they helped deliver and by emphasizing their symbolic responsiveness. Women senators strove to tell citizens that they were experienced and decisive by generating press releases on the important positions they hold in the U.S. Senate and by pronouncing clear positions on matters of public policy." @default.
