- W783575145 abstract "Darl ing , James E . , M .S . , August, 1976 Zoology Factors A f fec t ing the Trout Fishery of Big Sky Lake, Montana (106 pp.) D irector: Andrew L. Sheldon Big Sky Lake l i e s in the Clearwater drainage system of Missoula County, Montana. Only property owners and t h e i r guests are a l lowed access to f ish ing a t th is r e l a t i v e l y small, shallow lake. Homeowners requested that the f is h e ry of the lake be investigated to determine management regulat ions needed to ensure fu ture angling success. The study was conducted from October 1974 through September 1975. Physical and chemical parameters were surveyed using stan dard l imnological procedures. Plankton and bacter ia were sampled. Rainbow t ro u t ( S^mo g a i r d n e r i ) and brook t ro u t ( Salve! inus^ font i n a l i s ) were coTTicted by g i l l n e t t i n g , se t t ing a Wolf-type trap in the i n l e t creek, and angling. Scale samples and stomachs were removed a f t e r the f is h were weighed and measured. Creel cen sus forms were d is t r ib u te d to property owners. The lake exhib its seasonal trends in physical and chemical char a c te r is t i c s typical o f a moderately productive, d im ic t ic lake of the temperate zone. Po l lu t ion by en te r ic bacteria is absent. Rainbow and brook t ro u t are in good condit ion , growing rap id ly during t h e i r f i r s t 3 or 4 years, before reaching sexual m aturi ty . Princ ipa l food items of both species are Daphnia and H ya le l la azteca , although brook t r o u t appear to consume more benthos and rainbow t ro u t ingest more plankton. Fishing success a t Big Sky Lake (1 .04 f is h per hour) compares favorable with other lakes and streams in Montana. The fol lowing management practices are recommended: 1. la rger rainbow f in g e r ! in g s should be planted during la te spring; 2. f o r age f is h should not be introduced; 3. brown t ro u t ( Salmo t r u t t a ) and kokanee ( Oncorhynchus n e r j^ ) should not be planted; T . bar r ie r s to spawning f is h sho u ld ^e removed from the i n l e t creek; 5. perhaps large rainbow t ro u t should be released, and brook t ro u t should be more f u l l y exp lo ited . In fu th e r s tudies, the lake should be monitored to detect i n d i cators o f increasing eutrophicat ion . To determine proper stocking recommendations, sizes o f f is h populations and extent of natural recruitment should be estimated. The resu lts of adopted manage ment practices should be c lose ly followed." @default.
