- W784155280 abstract "The Mass Limits Review (MLR) made concessions to road trains by allowing an increase in mass on steer axles fitted with super single tyres to 6.7t. However these concessions have not been fully realised because of the problems arising from fitting super single tyres to the steer axle of road trains. The emergence of low profile tyres allowed truck operators to install wider tyres (but not as wide as the super singles) without the same problems. Dr GS Donald and Mr GP Youdale (Consulting Engineers) were engaged to undertake a pavement analysis to establish the theoretical equivalence between the damage caused by super single and low profile tyres. They concluded that the wider the contact area for the same load, the less the pavement damage.
