- W784260807 abstract "Measurement in heat transfer provides information on boundary layer conditions and transition. In hypersonic ground testing facilities the surface heating rates are determined by surface temperature measurements made use in thin film heat transfer gauges. But the difference in materials from heat transfer gauges used in theT4 shock tunnel and the models they are mounted in can lead to a difference in heat transfer rates due to their different thermal properties.Eilmer3 code written by Peter Jacobs was used to simulate these test conditions to calculate the difference in Stanton number from different scenarios of when heat transfer gauges were present and not. To simulate the presence of a heat transfer gauge the wall temperature along a flat plate was increased by 40K to the surrounding wall temperature at the location of the gauge.The free stream test conditions used are from Hayne for a T4 shock tunnel are a pressure of 2.67 kPa, velocity of 3000 m/s and a temperature of 579 K. With the initial condition of a near vacuum at 30 Pa and a temperature of 300 K, two scenarios on the accuracy of the data recorded from the heat transfer gauges were conducted. The first with the flow travelling along the full length of the conductive strip used in the heat transfer gauge gave an accuracy reading of 8.31%. The second when the gauge was rotated 90 degrees so that the flow travelled over the shortest length of the thin film giving a reading of 9.52%. These results should be taken into account when using thin film heat transfer gauges with respect to the orientation and their accuracy." @default.
