- W784813424 abstract "Road roughness affects road user costs and serves as a trigger for pavement rehabilitation. It is therefore an important element in a pavement management system. Interesting phenomena related to the routine measurement of road roughness were experienced in southern Africa. The aim of the paper is to present a number of these phenomena. It was found that calibrated road sections should be used for all types of roughness measuring devices, including profiling systems. Even if classed as Class 1 instruments, there can be up to 20% variation in roughness on roads with an IRI of less than 2 m/km. Rod and level measurements are prone to a number of errors, and the implications are presented. Using a proper system of calibration and control ensures stable measurements over time, as demonstrated by the Namibia experience. RTRRMS should be fitted in vehicles with coil springs when used on paved roads, as vehicles with leaf springs underestimate the roughness during surveys, even when properly calibrated.
