- W78565312 abstract "The experiments were made under linear and essentially non-linear conditions. In the linear experiments, carried out in a plasma prepared by an external source, the resonance was excited by a low-power instrument generator whose influence on the concentration of the plasma could be neglected. Thereby the parameters of the plasma (concentration, size of the column, magnetic field) were constant within the framework of the experiment or were strictly controlled, which is essential for the clarification of the physical picture of the phenomenon. The experiments were carried out at values of plasma concentration from 10/suyp 10/ to 4 x 10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/. In the majority of experiments the magnetic field constituted 1 to 2 x 10/sup 3/ G. The resonance was excited within the range of frequencies from a few to about 200 MHz by an excitation device in the form of an elongated ring and the resonance was recorded with respect to the variation of the Q of the measuring circuit and according to the magnetic-probe date. With the help of magnetic probes the spatial distribution of the varying magnetic fields in the plasma at resonance were also measured. These measurements allow the determination of the values k/sub r/more » and k/sub z/ and indicate the amplification (at resonance) of the varying magnetic field in the plasma. The concentration in the plasma was controlled with the help of middlehigh frequency methods as well as by double electric probes. The dependence of the resonance frequency on the concentration of plasma and on the magnitude of the magnetic field strength, which were experimentally observed, confirms the conclusions of the theory. However, qualitative measurements of the plasma show that apparently the energy dissipation is not explained by the simplest collision mechanisms. The non-linear experiment, in which the plasma was created by the same device in which the resonance was studied, is complicated (the resonance being observed at varying plasma parameters ---concentration and column dimension) but it is of practical interest mainly as an effective method of plasma creation. The investigation of the resonance in non-linear conditions allowed the determination of the power absorption by the plasma and the temperature of the plasma electrons.
