- W78745982 abstract "There is a growing recognition among linguists and educators that the spoken by Mexican-Americans constitutes a distinct dialect ? or, more accurately, a set of ? which has diverged sufficiently from standard forms of (whether Castilian, Mexican or other regional standards) to merit both serious study and a separate name ? usually Chicano (cf. Lozano 1961 ; Gonz?lez-Mena de LoCoco 1974), but also Mexican American (cf. Craddock 1973) or Southwest (cf. Ornstein 1969). It is also generally recognized that an enormous amount of linguistic work remains to be done on Chicano and its subdialects. Indeed, we have only just glimpsed the tip of the iceberg, as it were, in the studies which have so far been published (see Craddock 1973 for a superb survey); and a plea for additional work on all aspects of Chicano is the common refrain of those who have developed an interest in the language. In addition to the obvious benefits to Hispanic linguistics which would follow from stepping up the pace of research in Chicano Spanish, it seems apparent that the teaching of in this country would also improve if teachers were provided with up-to-date and realistic profiles of the varieties of Chicano and an accurate picture of the points of overlap and divergence between Chicano and standard Spanish. In a recent issue (1974) of The Bilingual Review, Gonz?lez-Mena de LoCoco has, in fact, attempted to delineate what she calls the salient differences between Chicano and standard Spanish with an eye toward the teacher who encounters non-standard speakers in the classroom. In a hurried treatment of phonological features, the author touches briefly on some of the differences between Chicano and standard vowels (p. 244) and consonants (p. 245); among the latter, she mentions s -> h and d -> 0 in the past participle ending. Now both of these changes, supposedly typical of Chicano Spanish, had already been described by Gonz?lez-Mena de LoCoco herself as occurring in standard regional dialects (pp. 244-245), so the reader has not really been given any new information about consonant variation in Chicano Spanish! Yet some differences between Chicano and standard do exist with regard to the allophonic variation of several consonants. It is to this matter that I will turn my attention for the remainder of this article. I will be focussing in particular on the consonant phonemes /h/ and /b/, with a few remarks about /d/." @default.
