- W78859554 abstract "1.0 INTRODUCTION International human resource management (IHRM) has recently been recognized as being a key element in the successful management of international business. The implementation of an international strategy or the achievement of goals for international operations can rarely be obtained if an MNC has poor IHRM. The basic elements of good HRM for an organization are to have the right numbers of people, with the right qualities, with the right timing, and with the right motivation to pursue organizational goals. As is the case with many other aspects of international management, trying to perform effective HRM at an international level greatly magnifies the complexity of HRM policies, programs and activities (Ondrack and Saks, 1990). However, there are two different ways of thinking about IHRM in terms of the needs of an MNC and also for MBA curriculum planning. One perspective is the need for an MNC to have all the HR service functions of an HR department performed effectively for staffing international operations. In an MBA program, this need would normally be served by a second year optional course on international aspects of HRM using a textbook such as Dowling and Schuler (1990) or Brewster (1991). Such a course may appeal more to students preparing for a career in HRM rather than a career in international management. The second perspective is the need for an MNC to have a high level of management skills among all managers to perform supervision and management tasks under the complexities of cross-cultural differences. In an MBA curriculum, this need may be served by a core program course in OB, using a text such as Adler (1991), or an optional course in international management using a text such as Lane and DiStefano (1992). In addition to the needs of managers in MNCs for greater awareness of the significance of cross-cultural differences and for greater skill levels in managing effectively in cross-cultural conditions, managers in most domestic operations today are also faced with similar needs. Rapidly growing cultural diversity within North America from immigration and legal pressures for employment equity for minorities are creating as many challenges for domestic managers as any international operations. Similarly, increasing penetration of North American markets by global competitors make the concept of a domestic market obsolete. Therefore, all contemporary managers need to be educated and trained for international management in these times, regardless of where or for whom they are employed. This paper will discuss a number of approaches for depth and focus for the internationalization of HRM in the MBA curriculum, as well as describe some results obtained from courses in international management skills training in the MBA program at Toronto. The paper will also discuss some issues involved for choosing various levels of commitment to IHRM content in a curriculum. 2.0 DEPTH OF IHRM CONTENT There are four basic levels of depth for IHRM content in an MBA curriculum ranging from presentation of information to acquisition to skills. The four levels are briefly discussed below: Information: Basic information about the phenomenon of cultural differences should be a standard element in the core curriculum of any MBA program. Normally this material is presented in the first year OB course, but such material could also be touched on courses in Introductory Marketing and in Ethics, for those programs with an ethics course. More extensive information could be presented in optional courses which specialize in various aspects of international business. While such information provides a necessary foundation for students, the cognitive information may be abstract and consequently, the impact on students' attitudes and behavior may be superficial. Experience: Having some sort of experience with cultural differences as part of the MBA curriculum can provide students with a much more significant appreciation of some of the complexities of international business. …" @default.
