- W788650981 abstract "IntroductionThere would be little point to weigh the opinion of an English novelist against the opinion of a (approximately) supra-national government developing laws 200 years later, be their object as concrete as it may be. Even more so, when the object is of an abstract nature, like the social issues always are.The contrast I draw in this paper is based on the assumption that Jane Austen did not just write down her personal opinion on the matter, but shed light over the prevailing ideas of her time and made them accessible for readers even two centuries later. That is, the prevailing opinion in the Georgian England. With a most prosperous economy and without wars on its own mainland, the Georgian England had a leading role in European intellectual debates at large and many educated women called into question the various expectations about their own social role. Once raised, the question remained open to discussion. At the end of the 17th century, Mary Wollstonecraft advocating women's equality and writing critiques of conventional femininity represented the most forwarded voice across Europe.Austen's own contribution in defining the accomplished lady does not lie mostly in the originality of her perspective or plot, but in literary conciseness and in the ability to put facts together most realistically. As for her modem readership, the accessibility does not concern only the pleasant reading of a well-written piece of literature. Jane Austen builds the respective pattern of an accomplished young woman in such a way as to fit in an entire social tissue. The social framework provided, far from estranging the educated readership, makes the pattern understandable, rational and natural. In what the European Union is concerned, the place of women in society seems to be relentlessly under consideration. There are political groups taking initiative in the field regardless matters such as the economic crisis or, on the contrary, in quest of solutions for this very crisis. They set up various task forces to undertake research and write projects and strategies. The EU brought together quite different countries and cultures. Yet the differences are not as striking as 200 years ago and some matters are of common concern. Amongst them, we find a definite concern for social justice, gender aspects included. The legislation has covered the equality of all fundamental and labor rights since long ago, but its reinforcement has been uneven. Moreover, the politicians and the representatives of the civil society have mutually agreed to deepen further the reflection on the meaning of equality and have required action according to their findings.Although no final objective is acknowledged to signify the end of the journey towards getting a definite, unquestionable and functional equality between men and women, the documents obviously show that the whole set of traditional assumptions about roles is shattered and another one is under construction, aiming to serve as a guideline for the future social relationships, both public and private. Predictably enough, these guidelines shape the expectations about women, shared by men and women themselves. They describe, although implicitly, the new accomplished young woman. The types of documents compared need an explanation, as I match old fictional writings with new political documents. This is how the reliable and accessible information is distributed in the respective periods. I have chosen Jane Austen for her discerning mind and her bright abilities as a social observer. If we corroborate historical information as provided by (11) - (15), we may safely assume that her statement of facts is objective and reliable. In the same time, it is obvious that the political initiatives of that time did not consider shaping a certain feminine behavior as their direct object and little information, if any, may be extracted from this source. The prescribed behavior and the surrounding imagery have been just a consequence of the social evolution in Western Europe for a long time and now we need to take for granted the realities which such statements uncover. …" @default.
