- W78928816 abstract "As daunting as it is to assemble data and estimate population viability for single populations, the real world is far more complicated. Ecological disturbances create spatial and temporal variation that will affect demography. Integration across many sites with different times since disturbance or disturbance regimes may be necessary to get a good idea of population persistence in a landscape. Species may also occur across environmental gradients or in patches that vary in quality. These complications challenge the simplicity implied by population viability analyses (PVAs). PVAs combine empirical data (usually on the entire life cycle) and modeling approaches to project the condition (and existence) of future populations (Menges 2000: Chaps. 1,6, this Vol.). Most PVAs have considered populations as uniform and without explicit consideration of disturbance regimes. However, more recently, researchers are treating disturbances and spatially explicit demography with a range of innovative approaches (Chap. 6, this Vol.)." @default.
