Through the nineteenth and well into the twentieth century, scholars admired the grand scheme of history that he had devised, and so situated him at the beginning of a modern tradition of speculative historical writing that included such luminaries as Herder, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Comte, Spencer, Spengler and Toynbee.1 From the mid-twentieth century, though, that tradition has come to be viewed with increasing suspicion by professional historians, in part because of their aversion to generalization, in part because of the fatalism implicit in such schemes.
