- W790007682 abstract "An Introduction to Workplace Bullying. Sheila White. London: Kamac, 2013This book is an important contribution in applying our work to a field:In the workplace and in schools the term covers a wide range of behaviours, extending from teasing to violent assault... Overt behaviours include physical threats and verbal abuse such as ridiculing and constant criticism. Covert actions of bullies include lying, spreading malicious rumours, and undermining performance at work by denying individuals' information and access to basic materials to carry out their tasks effectively. (P- 3)The Preface opens with clear intent: the three aims of the book are hidden worlds ... of new ways of conceptualising and bridging theory and practice (pp. xiv-xv). The first four chapters each cover the domains of: individuals, interpersonal relationships, groups, and organisational contexts. Each chapter also has a common tripartite structure moving from research reviews, to psychoanalytical theories, to answering practical concerns of those who engage with bullying behaviour that is drawn from the first two sections. Each chapter begins with an overview and key questions that are then addressed in the practical section. The final chapter provides a case study that illustrates theories and prescriptions in action. This is a book for all engaged in working in organisations and I would particularly underline its value to authors and academics as a model of clarity of style, purpose and accessible organisation of material. In the research surveys, the author makes great use of quotations from victims, and the reader is invited empathically to enter into their experience of suffering:Bullying is like being on a knife-edge of fear and dread. When you get up every morning and drive to work and you get that sinking feeling ... The dread is almost worse than the experience, (p. 4)It is a striking feature of the book that there are many quotes from victims' experience, however I could find none from self-confessed bullies. The challenge to engage with their experience might need to draw upon the world of criminology, forensic psychiatry, and forensic psychoanalysis such as developed at the Portman clinic (part of the Tavistock/Portman NHS Trust.).I want to point to a resource for understanding the experience of the bully that is mentioned but not developed. The author (p. 110) invokes Jonathan Asser's (2004) courageous description of using experiential groups with prisoners who have committed violent crimes, including murder, in high security prisons to define the dynamics of shame. Missing from the book is Jonathan Asser's engagement with these violent men's sense of bonding around the shame of being shook (= terrified), that had to be visited upon others. He describes the need to find a way of relating, without confronting vulnerable selves and an unstable group dynamic. Shaming risks violence. I thought the writer misses key evidence of how he came by his thinking, as he survived and found ways of relating to this group that did not attack their shame barrier head on.In facing the destructiveness of bullying, I want to underline what Sheila White highlights as the evocative to death. This medieval mythology is vividly represented by Alex Cree's evocative drawing of the Danse macabre on the cover: As bullying becomes established and intensifies, victims become increasingly submissive and loose 'voice'. In the final stag-the dance of death-the typical victim accepts the description given by the bully-that of (p. 52), including failure as a person. This devastating and annihilating trauma haunts the victim, not least by their collusion and consequent shame and guilt that further disempower them. This theme heralds exploring psychodynamics.Psychoanalytic theories begin with the struggle between life and death articulated in Freud's later work. …" @default.
