- W79031237 abstract "Abstract Hydrographic observations in the Baltic Sea during nearly a century have shown the picture of a highly non-steady system. The two major sources for these variations are the barometric pressure (the wind) and the river runoff. As the wind speed is only known by visual judgement, and, into the bargain, by a large number of observers, no reliable secular variation of the wind is known. This has been overcome by correlating the monthly mean wind speed squared to the monthly peak to peak value of the barometric pressure at Copenhagen, the last one being known with high accuracy since 1873. As the natural variations show a high correlation between the wind and the runoff, it is hard to separate the effect on for instance the salinity from the variation in the wind and in the runoff, respectively, unless one makes use of a mathematical model, which is based on knowledge of the hydrodynamics of the system. A first step (steady-state) model has been outlined and used to investigate the effect on the Baltic Sea from a diversion of part of the river Neva. The calculations show that if a 25% river diversion had been executed in the beginning of this century, a 30 to 40% higher salinity-variation would have been encountered in the Baltic Sea - compared to the actual variations during this century." @default.
