- W79052015 abstract "Accidental or intentional (therapeutic) exposure of humans to large doses of ionizing radiation or chemotherapeutic drugs often causes major detrimental effects on essential bodily functions. The hematopoietic and immune systems are most susceptible to lethal radiation damage. The gastrointestinal system is also sensitive to radiation damage but the lethal dose of irradiation is usually much higher than in the case of the hematopoietic or immune system. If the dose received is not sufficient to produce irreversible lethal damage to other organs, but is sufficient to cause lethal hematopoietic and immune system damage, the exposed individual can be rescued from death by reconstitution with a bone marrow graft. However, allogeneic grafts often lead to severe graft-versus-host disease and closely matched or autologous bone marrow is often not available. Alternative methods of restoration of the hematopoietic and immune systems without using cellular grafts would be desirable. Currently, the best candidates to generate such desirable effects on bone marrow regeneration are biological response modifiers (BRMs) such as cytokines. These factors are involved in controlling the production and activation of hematopoietic and immune cell populations. This review is intended to summarize the current knowledge regarding the abilities of these factors either to potentiate the effects of radiation damage or to help ameliorate and resolve the effects of radiation damage that would otherwise be lethal." @default.
