- W79147042 abstract "Seven years ago at the European Population Conference in Jyväskylä, Finland, in the main lecture at the plenary session on the future of the family, Hans J. Hoffmann-Novotny (1987) after having analysed the trends of the indicators of family in European countries, came to the conclusion: „... marriage and the marital family are becoming continuously weaker as institutions, and more and more fragile as groups... ‘Weak’ institutions mean more personal autonomy and freedom of individual choice, but they also imply a loss of culturally and structurally supported orientations and enforceable solidarity... The family has not only undergone fundamental changes, but has also definitely suffered a loss of importance, both as an institution and as a group.“ (Hoffmann-Novotny, 160 and 162) Hoffmann-Novotny treated the loss of the importance of family in terms of Tönnies’ theory (1979) on the development in modern societies from „Gemeinschaft“ (community) to „Gesellschaft“ (society). Family belongs to the Gemeinschaft type of institution and Hoffmann-Novotny claimed that „...it seems quite improbable that in the long run global systems of a ‘societal’ structure and culture can permanently coexist ( ‘cohabit’) with subsystems of the ‘community’ type“ (177), like the family. The structure of modern society enables the individual to withdraw from communities and even to live as a solitary human being. This might, however, result in isolation, social uprooting and anomie." @default.
