- W791686301 abstract "The Authors present generalised results of a study of the principal particulars of large LNG carriers. The study showed that the majority of ships of this type have: (a) steam turbine propulsion, with the possibility of burning evaporated LNG cargo as an additional source of heat for propulsion; and (b) a configuration fo cargo tanks consisting of either five spherical tanks or six membrane tanks. The article concentrates on the ships to which points (a) and (b) apply. Empirical formulae are developed for the weight of the steam propulsion plant in terms of propulsive power and ship displacement; the quantity of fuel required for a voyage in terms of propulsive power, calorific value of the fuel oil, volumetric capacity of cargo tanks, length of voyage, ship speed, and certain other factors (which are defined); and the minimum permissible quantity of fuel oil to be carried on the assumption that, in a given voyage, it will not be possible to use the LNG cargo for propulsion and that, consequently, the ship speed will be reduced. On the basis of these formulae and a computer algorithm (shown in simplified block form, and utilising sub-routines already developed for determining ship particulars from given input data), calculations of ship dimensions were carried out for methane carriers assuming a wide range of ship speeds and cargo capacities. The results are shown in comparison with the dimensions of a number of actual ships, as a check on the methodology here developed. It is concluded that this methodology is reliable enough to be used in the preliminary design stages of new methane carriers." @default.
