- W79404292 abstract "El de is a book rich in meaning and literary suggestiveness. Carmen Martin Gaite creates a work which, in the words of Joan Lipman Brown, can be called a remarkable hybrid (13). It is at once a social commentary on the Franco years, a reflection on writing, a mystery story, and a corpus of childhood memories. During a tempetuous night of insomnia the author-protagonist is visited by a gentleman dressed in black, of ambiguous identity and questionable reality. Through her interview with this mysterious man, she reveals episodes from her past that have been significant in the formation of her personality and profession, her hidden sentiments, and her many fears. By assuming a psychoanalytical role, this dialogue assumes the function of a lengthy monologue in which the nocturnal visitor personifies the writer's sub conscious as she struggles to confront her new novel and her past.1 When we examine that past, we find that the first significant moment of change in the life of the author-protagonist was the disruptive years of the Spanish Civil War. Marking the loss of her childhood hideaway, the cuarto de atras of the book's title, and her initial acquisition of knowledge of deprivation, fear, and death, those years constitute a rite of passage from childhood to the threshold of adulthood. The Civil War and its subsequent Francoist years loom among the protagonist's memories as the nightmare that destroyed the child's idyllic paradise of innocence, ignorance, and timelessness. At the same time, the war serves as a testing-ground for the child's survival instincts. During the war the frightened young girl fights off the real world and her fears by beginning to write. What begins as an escape mechanism becomes a tool for self-preservation. In literature the author-protagonist finds the road that will lead her to her life's work and therefore to her adult sense of individuation. In symbolic terms she finds a personal space, or as" @default.
