Emerging primary care clinic chains, however, are investing in electronic medical records (EMRs) and automation of their administrative functions.Objectives: To study the medical record keeping practices and the state of automation in primary care clinic chains in India and East AfricaMethods: We surveyed the leadership of five emerging primary care clinic chains. Summary analyses were done on the survey responses.Results: The clinic chains surveyed provide primary care services to low and middle-income communities in India and East Africa. Four are located in urban and one in rural setting. They range from 2 clinics to 41 clinics in size as of May 2014. The core services provided include consultation and minor procedures by a Primary Care Provider (PCP) who is either a physician or a nurse, dental procedures by a dentist, laboratory tests and dispensary services. All clinic chains keep medical records of patients, either wholly in paper or wholly electronic or a mix of both, where the PCP initially creates a paper record of the consultation and this is later entered into the EMR. Two clinic chains provide a copy of prescription to the patient, while others only provide a receipt and educational material to the patient at the end of the consultation. The level of automation for medical records and for administrative services varies widely. While two clinic chains have completely automated patient registration, billing, lab, stock keeping and management information system, one clinic chain is completely paper based, and the others are in various stages of planning and installing the information systems. Of the four chains that have some degree of automation, one has developed the software in-house, while the others have purchased software licenses. These software are run on 1 to 3 computers per clinic. Three out of five chains are also using SMS integration for sending appointment reminders or billing details to patients.Conclusion: Emerging primary care clinic chains are investing in robust medical record keeping and increasingly relying on information technology for backend processes as well as patient-facing functions. This data could be used to design community interventions as well as to streamline internal processes." @default.
